Similarity – Starting with a Singing Career

Justin Timberlake began his singing career by becoming part of the boy band, N Sync, at the age of fourteen. Their first album called “N Sync” came out in 1998 and obtained a chart topper, “Tearin’ Up My Heart” from that album. They created a second album called “No Strings Attached” in 2000. Their second album sold over 2.4 million albums in its first week and 15 million overall. The expectations for their next album were very high. Their next album came out in 2001 and was entitled “Celebrity.” It sold 5 million copies, but did not come anywhere near the amount of copies sold of their  second album. After their tour in 2002, N Sync announced that they were taking a break from recording.

Justin Timberlake then took the band’s break as an opportunity to go solo. He went on to become very successful as a solo artist as well. One of his most popular songs was the song “Sexy BackKaty Perry struggled to become a successful solo artist. She tried for many years to get her songs to become popular. It didn’t seem as difficult for Justin Timberlake because he had made previous record deals that became very successful. In the end, however, both became very successful after much hard work.

Similarity – Transition to Acting

Both Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake transitioned from singers to actors. Justin Timberlake played a role in movies such as: “Alpha Dog” in 2006, “Shrek the Third” in 2007, “Shrek Ever After” in 2010, “The Social Network” in 2010, “Friends with Benefits” in 2011, and “Bad Teacher” in 2011. He took part in a romantic comedy, a comedy, a movie based on a true story, as well as a cartoon. His roles proved “that he had far more depth and range than most had anticipated from the former head of a ’90s boy band.” In most of the movies he played roles in, he either played a nerdy guy or a sexy, charming, and cool guy. This shows that he is a very versatile and successful actor. Katy Perry is also very versatile in her acting roles, as shown through her difference from her Raising Hope role and her Smurfs role.

Similarity – Voice Over

Justin Timberlake is similar to Katy Perry because both did voice overs as part of their acting careers. Katy Perry did the voice of Smurfette in “The Smurfs” and Justin Timberlake did the voice of Artie in “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Ever After.”

Similarity – Guest Appearance

Katy and Justin both made a guest appearance on a show, Katy on “Raising Hope” and Justin on “Saturday Night Live.” A clip from his guest appearance on SNL can be seen here. He also went on to host SNL on October 11, 2003, December 16, 2006, May, 9, 2009, and May 21, 2011.

Difference – Acting before Voice Over

The difference here is that Katy Perry started her acting career with a voice over role, while Justin Timberlake started with regular roles and then did a voice over role and went back to regular roles.

Difference– Starting Age and Progress

Justin Timberlake started his singing career with N Sync at the age of 14, while Katy wasn’t able to start her career successfully until later. This has lead Justin Timberlake to become a successful actor sooner than Katy Perry. Katy is just starting her acting career and has only made one guest appearance on a show and one voice over part in a movie, while Justin Timberlake has made his way successfully into the acting business. I hope Katy is able to become as successful as Justin when it comes to acting.
